Frequently asked questions

26 of them, grouped. Anything we cannot do is written down as plainly as anything we can — the questions worth asking a new product are mostly about its limits, and a page that only lists strengths has not answered any of them.

Plans and billing

Is the free plan really free?
Yes, and it is not a trial. Boards, cards, collaborators, templates and exports are uncapped: no card limit, no watermark, no seat count, no expiry date. The one thing the free plan does not include is hosted file storage, because bytes in a bucket are the only part of this that costs us money per user. Free boards show any image you paste a link to.
What is the catch?
Storage. Everything made of database rows is effectively free for us to run and scales with how much you think, so we give all of it away. Files scale with how much you upload, including from someone who signed up to use us as a free image host, so uploads are the one thing you pay for. That is the whole of it.
What does Pro actually add?
Five things: hosted uploads for images, PDFs, audio and files; version history with one-click restore; smart layout, which untangles a web of connected cards into something readable; export at up to eight times resolution for print; and brand kits, which save a board's palette and background for reuse. It is $7.99 a month.
What happens if I cancel Pro?
You drop back to the free plan, which is the whole product. Nothing is deleted, no board becomes read-only, no card is locked and no collaborator is removed. You stop having the Pro tools, and files you already uploaded stay where they are. You can export everything at any point either way.
How do you make money if the free plan is complete?
Pro and Team subscriptions. We would rather you used the product for a year and then paid for the sharper tools than hit a card limit on day two and left with a bad opinion of us. It is a slower business model and we think it is the correct one for something you are meant to keep your work in.
Is there an annual plan?
No. Pro is $7.99 a month, month to month, and there is no discount for paying a year up front because there is no year-long commitment to sell you. Cancel whenever and the subscription runs to the end of the period you paid for.
How does the friend referral work?
Every Pro subscriber has a code. Anyone who uses it pays $3.99 a month instead of $7.99, and the person whose code it was gets the same discount, for as long as you both keep subscribing. If either of you cancels, both go back to the standard price.
How does the Team plan work?
One subscription at $29 a month covers up to 25 people, and everyone on it gets the full Pro toolset. It is one bill rather than one per seat, people join with a team code or an emailed invite, and a seat frees up the moment someone leaves.
How do I pay?
PayPal, which handles the card details so we never see them. Subscriptions renew monthly until cancelled and you can cancel from your settings or from PayPal directly.

Coming from something else

How is this different from Milanote?
The short version is the free plan. Milanote's free tier stops at 100 notes, images or links across every board you own; ours does not stop. Beyond that we are cheaper monthly, we have roughly three times as many card types, and we have dark mode, freehand drawing, a command palette and JSON export, none of which they offer. They have native mobile apps and a decade of refinement, and we have neither.
Can I import my Milanote boards?
Not automatically, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. There is no Milanote export format we can read, so moving over means rebuilding the boards you actually still use. In practice most people move two or three and leave the rest, which is a smaller job than it sounds.
Is this a Milanote clone?
It started from the same idea — an infinite board you arrange things on rather than a document you write in — and diverged from there. The card types, the logic wiring, the keyboard model and the pricing are all our own, and the comparison page is honest about where they are still ahead.
What if I want to leave?
Export the board as JSON and it re-imports cleanly, here or into whatever you build next. PNG, SVG and Markdown are there too, but those are pictures and text of your board rather than the board itself. We would rather the door out was obvious than have you stay because leaving looked expensive.

Using the boards

What can I put on a board?
28 kinds of card: notes, images, links, tasks, nested boards, columns, comment zones, files, PDFs, video, colour swatches, code, comments, tables, shapes, callouts, quotes, progress bars, dividers, embeds, audio, countdowns, checkmarks, smart checkboxes, buttons, timers, timelines and header text. All of them edit in place on the canvas.
Is the canvas actually infinite?
Far enough that you will not find the edge. Boards also nest inside boards, so a project that has sprawled collapses back into a single tile on its parent once you are done with it, which in practice matters more than raw canvas size.
Can I draw on the board?
Yes, with a pressure-aware pen with colour and width control. It is there for the arrows and circles that no card type will ever quite capture.
Does it work offline?
No. Boards are stored server-side and sync live, so a lost connection means a read-only board until it comes back. If you need to work on a plane, export first.
Does it work on a tablet or phone?
Boards are readable and navigable on a tablet. Serious editing wants a pointer and a keyboard, so the desktop browser is the experience we build first and the one we would point you at. There are no native mobile apps.
Is there a keyboard shortcut for everything?
Close to it. There is a command palette on Cmd+K, and multi-select, alignment, distribution, grouping, z-order, rotation and duplication are all reachable without a menu. Press ? on any board for the full map.

Working with other people

Can I work on a board with my team?
Yes, in real time, with live cursors and presence. Share a board and pick a role per person: owners and editors change things, commenters can only leave comment cards, and viewers get a clean read-only board. The interface adapts to the role, so nobody is offered a button that will not work.
Do collaborators need a paid plan?
No. Sharing and real-time collaboration are free, for any number of people, and a free collaborator on a Pro user's board is a full participant. A Team subscription is about giving your own people the Pro tools, not about permission to work together.
Can I share a board publicly?
Yes, with a link that carries whichever role you chose. Anyone with the link gets that role, so treat a viewer link as public and do not put anything on that board you would not publish.

Your data

How is my data stored?
In Postgres on Supabase, with row-level security on every table, so a query can only ever return rows your account is entitled to. Traffic is encrypted in transit. It is not end-to-end encrypted, which means we hold keys that could decrypt your rows — we would rather write that down than let you assume otherwise.
Do you train AI on my boards?
No. Your boards are not training data, are not sold, and are not shared with anyone for advertising.
Can I delete my account and everything in it?
Yes, from settings, and it removes your boards and cards rather than flagging them hidden. Export anything you want to keep first, because we cannot get it back for you afterwards.
Where are you based?
Norway. That puts us inside the EEA and under the GDPR, and the supervisory authority we answer to is Datatilsynet. The privacy policy names the subprocessors and what each one holds.
